The Cycle Of Life
Have you ever taken a moment from your busy life to reflect
about the cycles of life? There are many cycles that make up
our existence, all of which affect us in different ways. One
of the most basic ones is the water cycle. It is a simple
cycle with far reaching effects on our lives.
Water has a life cycle that is never ending. Water drops
form in the air (atmosphere) form clouds, and when
conditions are right fall as precipitation (rain or snow.)
They form patches of water, ranging from small puddles to
mighty oceans. Heat in the form of sunshine and hot air
causes evaporation. The water drops rise into the atmosphere
starting the whole cycle again.
The water cycle has a huge impact on our lives. For example:
Drought: Our crops depend on rain, too little and we will
have droughts destroying crops and causing lack of food and
deaths. An example of this would be the devastating "Dust
Bowl" effect of the 1930's that hit Oklahoma USA. This lack
of rain and dry conditions caused enormous social upheaval
and allowed the large landowners to change the face of
farming and people's lives forever.
On the other hand floods have also caused devastation and
many deaths. The terrible floods that occur in parts of Asia
due to the Monsoons are an example of the effects of
flooding, plus Annual River flooding in many areas of the
world.
However by in large the water cycle is beneficial to us. It
is how this vital element keeps on replenishing itself, so
that it is always available for us. Without water there
would be no life, as even the tiniest single cell creature
and plant must have water to survive.
Unfortunately this natural cycle is being interfered with,
by atmospheric pollution. Our factories are spewing out
chemical pollutants, and cars send clouds of unseen carbon
monoxides into the air, to name just a few ways we are
affecting the atmosphere. This results in "acid rain." The
changing chemical balance of the air around us has resulted
in the rain becoming more acid and instead of helping us is
actually killing the fish in our lakes and causing our crops
to grow less. Plus our actual drinking water sources are
being effected.
In recent times the EPA has attempted to control this
problem but the battle is far from over. There is a
continuous war being waged by environmentalists, factory
owners and consumers. There are water alerts all over the
world and especially in USA, one of the most heavily
industrialized countries in the world. We should all be
aware of these environmental hazards and how they are
affecting the water cycle and ultimately our vital water
supplies and health.
