Sea Life

Two thirds of or world is made up of water. Much of this
consists of seas and oceans. They are a dynamic force
dictating the lives of many people. Those in coastal and
island regions have learnt to respect these vast bodies of
water. In fact many of these communities base their whole
lives around the seas and oceans. They owe their whole
existence to their relationship with the sea.

Coastal and island communities make use of the resources of
the sea for their everyday life. Here are a few examples:

· Fishing for food

· Using seaweed for fertilizer

· Using seaweed for food products.

· Using driftwood and seaweed as fuel for their fires.

· Using the sea for recreation.

Many professions focus around the sea. Sailors of all sorts
challenge the sea in vessels great and small. Some use the
sea for recreation and others as trained professionals.
Fishing is an age old profession, that has been practiced
for centuries. The skills learned are passed from
generation to generation and taught to children when they
are quite young. Rich traditions are built and nurtured by
families who have lived in the same community for many
years. Fishing is a dangerous job and fishermen have a deep
respect for the seas that challenge them daily. Their
relationship with the watery elements is a unique and deep
one.

Seaweed is used by coastal communities to fertilize and
enrich the light soil in these regions to grow food. It is
also used in several food products the most common being
gelatin. Seaweed and drift wood from the sea is also used
for fuel for fires.

The sea is used for all sorts of recreations like surfing,
swimming and boating to name a few. Our oceans have
provided pleasure for many centuries and continue to let
people enjoy varieties of water sports.

Nations like the Phoenicians, Greeks and British became
powerful by their skills in seamanship and trading. The
seas became lucrative trading routes for these nations that
“ruled the waves.” The waterways of the world were of great
importance to the spread of civilization, as well as
trading goods of all types. Before modern transport like
planes, the seas were used as important medias for travel.

The sea has fascinated many artists, writers and composers.
It has and will always be an inspiration to many, its power
to take life in a moment and be calm again in a short
matter of hours draws our attention to the power of these
mighty bodies of water. Reminding us once again of the
importance of water. Water is indeed the essence of life
and we should all learn to respect and look after our great
seas and waterways.
